Project Overview

The CVS Healthy Planet System is a holistic approach to increasing accessible shopping and education of health and wellness products at CVS.

This project was in conjunction with the national studio of Design for America and an official partnership with CVS. With CVS as our client, myself and 4 other women proposed this solution to several CVS Health executives.

Key Features

  • Sustainability Locker
  • Refill Station
  • Sustainability Metrics
  • Carbon Cost Receipts
  • Branding and Design Guidelines

Context

Compared to its competitors (Walgreens and Target), CVS Health struggles in promoting and maintaining a strong consumer base that buys sustainable products. Based on our research within our community, many of the pain points interviewees expressed were lack of understanding of which products are actually sustainable, not being able to find sustainable products and the sustaniable products being too expensive.

CVS is the largest healthcare company in the United States and is focused on becoming the most human-centric. They have thousands of stores across the nation with multiple health-related services making them extremely accessible to the general public. However, that disconnect between actually shopping sustainably still exists.

Our Goal

Create a system that educates consumers on sustainable products and provides accessible options to promote health and wellness.

The Solution

Based on our research and persona we constructed, we constructed the Healthy Planet System. The system’s purpose is to educate and provide accessible and sustainable products to all people. Sustainable shopping is generally inaccessible to middle to low-income people. In our college town of Providence, RI, I found that there was a significant population of Hispanic residents who were not shopping for sustainable products due to the cost. Having seen the common trend amongst minority communities my whole life, I urged my group to move in the direction of creating an accessible shopping system, as there are 8 CVS stores within Providence, giving CVS the ability to potentially break down any barriers and level the playing field for sustainable shopping.
